DEL CAMPO

A side hustle born on the 4th green.

The Question

The year is 2023. I am an engineer at Tesla, based in California, but back home in Florida for the holidays. Walking the 4th green at the local club, not playing particularly well but enjoying the leisurely Sunday stroll, a hometown buddy asks the question that built a company.

"What's up with the socks? Notice you wear them almost every time out."

And Then I Heard Myself Talking

Unprompted, the pitch came out fully formed.

Right at the ankle. The perfect height. They do not fall down in your shoe. They keep bunker sand and leaves and other crap out. They are not the typical, subpar, borderline-disposable golf sock. They are durable. Subtle logo. The only problem is there are not enough designs.

The socks in question? Technically, basketball socks.

My buddy's response is the sole (pun intended) reason Del Campo exists today.

"Ah nice. Well. Why don't you just make your own?"

Tesla by day. Socks by night, and on weekends, and any other hour I could find. Material, length, compression, elasticity, durability. Each one tested the way every other sport tests its gear. Wear, wash, dry, wear again.

On the 25th try, I wore the same pair for three weeks straight. Just as plush on day 21 as on day one. The smiley still crisp. Soft, comfy, breathable.

That was the one.

Then we had to name it. But that is a story for another day.
